Many people are drawn to natural gas powered generators for their home because natural gas is usually easy and convenient to obtain (some even get it to fuel their homes), and because many natural gas powered generators can also run on propane with only a simple adjustment. After all, even the most expensive, top-of-the-line diesel generator is no good if you can’t get fuel for it to run off of!
If you are considering your home generator for use in a natural disaster, think about fuel availability—gas lines and gas shipping are often disrupted when the weather turns terrible, and a stock of propane can easily be kept close at hand. Though natural gas powered generators are no match for the diesel generator’s reliability, they can be the easiest to run and fuel in remote or disaster areas. Propane has an almost infinite shelf life, and can be stored in bulk for use when you need it! Before choosing this more cost-effective, but less reliable option, ask yourself a few questions: What fuels are readily available in my area? How will I be using this generator?
The answers to these questions will help you know if a natural gas powered generator will be just the ticket for your home generator.
