Businesses Use Generators in Recent Midwest Flooding

In June 2008, intense spring rains pushed the Iowa River over its banks in Iowa City, which subsequently caused flooding in parts of Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Wisconsin. The record-breaking floods have affected countless people and their livelihoods, as well as destroyed numerous businesses and public buildings.

This recent flooding in the Midwest is yet another example of the different types of extreme weather that can affect just about anyone anywhere. In many cases however, businesses that were in the middle of the flood-affected areas were able to keep their doors open because of the use of a generator.

For example, the newspaper of Cedar Rapids, The Gazette, was able to continue to cover the story of the flooding with the help of an emergency generator. Without electricity or running water and the flood waters just outside their front door, with the help of a generator and portable bathrooms, they were able to continue “putting the paper out through heroic, historic effort by the staff.”

The famous Quaker Cereal plant, known as the world’s largest cereal factory, also in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, had to shut its doors because of the floods. But not before staying open longer than expected. Sandbags and emergency generators were brought in to keep a skeleton crew on, and the plant says that in part because of these heroic efforts by the staff, they do not expect any major supply disruptions, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Yet another example of use of a generator in these disastrous conditions was by the Cedar Rapids utility company. Officials of the city feared that the supply of drinking water would run out. Only one of the city’s wells was working, and this was because it was protected by sandbags and pumps that were powered by a generator, according to Time Magazine.

These three businesses’ use of a generator along with other emergency equipment is an example of how being prepared for a disaster can help keep your business running, especially if your business’ services are vital to your community.
